SELF CONTROL (also known as self regulation) is the ability to control one’s thoughts, emotions and actions in order to obtain some reward later. Self regulation is an extremely important executive function of the brain, it is like as a moral muscle that allows us to take those critical extra seconds to recognize the possible consequences of our actions and put on the brakes. Self-control is central to many important life outcomes, it plays a major part in:
- Focusing attention & Achieving more
- Studying
- Keeping fit
- Eating well
- Regulating stress
- Getting what we want
- Managing difficult situations
- Developing great relationships
- Building a happy family
- Etc.
Numerous studies have shown that the ability to exert self-control is crucial to success in life.
